		<description>Hans Tammen is just another worker in rhythms, frequencies and intensities. He likes to set sounds in motion, and then sit back to watch the movements unfold. Using textures, timbre and dynamics as primary elements, his music is continuously shifting, with different layers floating into the foreground while others disappear. This flows like clockwork, “transforming a sequence of instrumental gestures into a wide territory of semi-hostile discontinuity; percussive, droning, intricately colorful, or simply blowing your socks off” (Touching Extremes).

His works have been presented at festivals in the US, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, India, South Africa, Armenia, Japan, the Middle East and all over Europe. He has recorded on labels such as Clang, Innova, ESP-DISK, Nur/Nicht/Nur, Gold Bolus, Nachtstück,&#38;nbsp;Creative Sources, Leo Records,&#38;nbsp;Potlatch and Outnow.Hans Tammen received grants and composer commissions from NewMusicUSA, &#38;nbsp;Chamber Music America,&#38;nbsp;MAPFund, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, American Music Center, Lucas Artists Residencies Montalvo, New York State Council On The Arts (NYSCA), New York Foundation For The Arts (NYFA), American Composers Forum&#38;nbsp;w/&#38;nbsp;Jerome Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Funds, New York State Music Fund, Goethe Institute&#38;nbsp;w/ Foreign Affairs Office, among others.He plays electronics, synthesizers and guitars, and writes for and conducts large ensembles, notably his all-electronic Dark Circuits Orchestra, and the 18-piece chamber-jazz ensemble Third Eye Orchestra, both founded in 2005. In 2021 FLUX String Quartet commissioned him to write a large work for string quartet and live electronics.


Hans Tammen is currently teaching at School of Visual Arts, Hunter College and NYU. From 2001 to 2014 he worked at Harvestworks Digital Media Art Center in NYC, where he was responsible for the Client Services, Education and Artist In Residence program, helping countless digital media artists through completion of their works. As an arbitrator at BTQ in the 1990s, he spent a decade advising unions about electronic monitoring and surveillance at the workplace, and negotiating contracts and agreements to minimize surveillance aspects. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Kassel, studying on a stipend from Friedrich Ebert Foundation.Writings

LARGE ENSEMBLES / BINARY CONDUCTINGBinary Conducting concepts were developed to facilitate open form compositions similar to Earle Brown’s Available Forms. The idea has been brewing in my mind since I saw the David Murray Big Band conducted by Craig Harris at the Knitting Factory, sometime in the late 90s. It finally took off at a Bitches Brew workshop I conducted at the Sound Symposium Festival in St. John’s, Canada 2004. It was there that I first jumped off stage, to arrange the form in real time. I am also deeply indebted to Teo Macero, as I feel that I am arranging the music in similar ways as he has done in the studio with Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew music - albeit, in my case, live on stage.

For my own open form pieces for the Third Eye Orchestra, the units in the score are fully notated. I arrange the units horizontally (one after the other), and stacking them vertically. There’s no need to come up with a fancier title for this conducting system, if I basically just turn units on or off - hence just Binary Conducting. 
Currently I use flash cards to indicate the units, and three or four self explanatory hand signs to conduct the piece. I have used other conducting techniques as well, such as a remotely controllable lighting device for the Third Eye Electric Band, in which colors were associated with specific sections in the band. In fact, any technique that allows for indicating one out of numerous units would work. For Dark Circuits &#38;amp; Light Orchestra’s Crossing the Langrangian Point, performed in a dark room, I wrote a software that transmitted conducting information to the player’s smartphones, tablets and laptops.The all-electronic Dark Circuits Orchestra concept grew out of two laptop orchestra performances in Bulgaria in 2005 – one on Bolshevik Island in the Black Sea, the other in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. First I called them “Third Eye Laptop Orchestra”, but the whole idea of&#38;nbsp; “laptop” orchestras quickly became stale. &#38;nbsp;One of the exciting elements of contemporary electronic music practice is that we are still developing our own instruments. Herein lies immense potential, and I am primarily working with performers who develop their very own approach to electronics. Since 2014 it’s called Dark Circuits Orchestra.
 The Third Eye Electric (Miles) Band plays music from Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew period and later, 1969 to 1986.
